Biography
Cho Chang-hwan (b. 1964, Boeun, South Korea) graduated from the Department of Western Painting, College of Fine Arts, Hongik University. His works are centered on the concept of “SOOM” (숨, Breath) — he views his paintings as portraits of “another ego composed of breath,” connecting breathing to the East Asian philosophical concept of “Ki” (기, life force).
Using single-hair brushes, he applies approximately ten layers of paint on canvas, alternating dark and light colors. The resulting abstract color-lines move with both flexibility and intensity. By removing the distinction between subject and background, his works possess an inherent potential for expansion.

조창환(1964년, 보은 출생)은 홍익대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업했다. 그의 작품은 ‘숨(SOOM)’ 개념을 중심으로 — 자신의 그림을 “숨으로 이루어진 또 다른 자아의 초상”으로 바라보며, 호흡을 동양 철학의 ‘기(氣)’ 개념과 연결한다.
한 올로 만들어진 붓을 사용하여 캔버스 위에 어두운 색과 밝은 색을 번갈아 약 10겹의 물감을 쌓아 올린다. 이렇게 만들어진 추상적 색선은 유연함과 긴장감을 동시에 지닌다. 주체와 배경의 구분을 제거함으로써 작품은 본질적인 확장 가능성을 가진다.
Artist Statement
조창환 작가는 생명의 본질적인 요소인 “숨”을 시각적으로 구현하는 작업을 지속해오고 있다. 그의 작품은 단순한 추상이 아니라, 생명의 가장 기본적인 활동인 호흡을 시각적·촉각적으로 형상화하는 과정에서 탄생한다. 숨이란 반복적이고 무의식적인 행위이며, 동시에 시간적인 현상이기도 하다. 그는 이를 “시간의 공간화” 또는 “촉각화”라는 개념으로 표현한다.
전통 빗자루에서 고른 한 가닥의 싸리나무를 도구로 삼아 한 올 한 올을 화면 위에 쌓아올린다. 가까이에서 보면 섬세한 선들이 생동하고, 멀리서 보면 화면 전체가 차분한 숨결로 다가온다. 이 다층적 감각의 변주는 시간이 지나도 새로운 해석을 불러일으키며, 우리 모두가 공유하는 생명에 대한 깊은 성찰로 이어진다.
Cho Chang-hwan visually manifests “breath” — the essential element of life. His work gives tactile form to breathing through the “spatialization of time,” using a single Lespedeza stalk to layer strokes one by one onto the canvas, mirroring the ceaseless rhythm of respiration. Up close, delicate lines move as if alive; from a distance, the composition settles into a calm, quiet breath.
