Our current exhibition presents Cho Chang-hwan’s SOOM (Breath) series, on view now through 31 October 2026.
A graduate of the Department of Western Painting at Hongik University (b. 1964, Boeun), Cho builds each canvas from roughly ten layers of paint applied with single-hair brushes, using a single Lespedeza stalk to lay down stroke after stroke. He describes the work as the “spatialization of time” — breathing made visible — connecting respiration to the East Asian concept of Ki (life force). Up close the delicate lines seem alive; from a distance the surface settles into a calm, quiet breath.

홍익대학교 서양화과를 졸업한 조창환(1964년 보은 출생)은 한 올 붓으로 캔버스 위에 약 10겹의 물감을 쌓아 올립니다. 전통 빗자루에서 고른 한 가닥의 싸리나무를 도구로 삼아 한 올 한 올 화면 위에 선을 쌓아가며, 이를 “시간의 공간화”라 부릅니다. 호흡을 동양 철학의 ‘기(氣)’ 개념과 연결하는 그의 작업은, 가까이에서는 섬세한 선이 생동하고 멀리서는 화면 전체가 차분한 숨결로 다가옵니다.
